Andrewsarchus was the largest carnivorous land mammal that ever walked on the face of the Earth. With a lenght of 15 feet and 6,5 feet tall at the shoulder (The head alone was nearly 3 feet long).
It lived in the late Eocene epoch (40 - 36 million years ago) in what is now the Gobi desert in Mongolia. Andrewsarchus belonged to an extinct group of mammals known as the Mesonychids, a group of carnivorous mammals that had hoofs instead of claws. Some of the early Mesonychids gave rise to the whales.
The one in the photo is a life-like and life-sized model of what we think the animal looked like when it was alive and it can be seen in museum Museon in The Hague
